Storyteller

In the history of right now, many are asking WHY in a harder way, WHY NOT in a ruder way. Stories, whether fiction or history, need to break the rigid hips of racism, look for other ways to walk.

Dog Wars – a novel in waiting

Trapped in a city terrorized by packs of savage dogs, thirteen-year-old Rona defies her three half-siblings and their three violent dads, to track down her missing mother.

Travel Writing

I like to veer off the tourist track when I travel. My photos and feature articles on Tibetans in China and Mosuo matrilineal culture have been published in Natural History, TNT, and major New Zealand daily newspapers, The New Zealand Herald, The Press and The Otago Daily Times.

These pandemic days, however, I travel via my bookshelves.

Photography

Photos from Caracas, Venezuela, where I taught for a summer, were featured on the cover of Parsons SCE Journal, Scapes. See photos.

A Bit About Me

I support the activists who are right now forcing the reallocation of city budgets to remedy racist violence. They renew my hope for the future of all of us.

In my day job, I teach immigrants, mainly women, to communicate in English, and I was active in my chapter of the United Federation of Teachers until the paternal model finally defeated me.

Former jobs, in New Zealand, England and the U.S, include farm and construction laboring, driving, computer programming, computer sales, meatpacking, sewing, appliance assembly, and clerical work.

I live with my wife, Vienna Carroll, in New York City. I love plants both wild and cultivated, and use food as medicine.
